Almost in a month, on February 28, the event expected by many in the world of the film industry will take place – the 88th Academy Awards ceremony. In recent years, the film award and its results have hardly been fully accepted by society. It’s worth at least remembering “12 Years a Slave,” which won the award for Best Film in 2014. But it was thanks to the nomination that I watched this film then (not yet knowing that it would win), because bad films cannot be nominated. Yes, yes, I was naive and young, apparently..

A melodrama about how a young girl Eilis Lacey emigrates to Brooklyn from Ireland, where she settles down and falls in love, but tragic news from her homeland forces her to return to Ireland, where she falls in love with another man and faces a dilemma of choice. The film is based on the book Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. I found it a bit boring, but I can’t call it bad. I recommend watching it with your significant other – she will most likely like it.
A chase film with mesmerizing special effects and native filming in the Namib Desert. If you didn’t have time to watch the film in the cinema, you lost a lot – from the TV screen it no longer looks so fascinating. Not recommended to watch unless you like it big GIANT amount of action..
Ridley Scott and Matt Damon in a film about how duct tape saves lives (just kidding, of course). Based on a book again, this time by Andy Weir – "The Martian". The story of a mission to Mars in which an astronaut was accidentally left behind on the red planet. Recommended viewing, even more recommended reading. The dark and empty space for which many people love Ridley Scott is, unfortunately, absent. It is worth noting that the film is already collecting its awards and started with 2 Golden Globes.
The film is loosely based on the life of colonist Hugh Glass and Michael Pahnke’s novel The Revenant. DiCaprio is again in pursuit of an Oscar and this time he is trying to survive a fight with a bear and take revenge on his offenders. He is helped by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who decided to shoot only in natural light for greater realism, and the most modern video camera in the world ARRI 65, capable of filming what is happening in a resolution of 6560 x 3102 pixels. What is happening looks great, and Iñárritu managed to maintain his signature style even in such a film.
A powerful drama about a girl who was kidnapped at the age of 17 and imprisoned in a room. During her imprisonment, she gave birth to a son, who for five years of his life never left his room and saw another world only on TV. The film constantly puts pressure on the viewer, which is largely achieved by the limited number of actors in the frame and the interior. Watch only if you like to empathize with heroes who are struggling with the problem of their socialization in society.
Film-journalistic investigation, again based on real events. Journalists from the small newspaper The Boston Globe conduct an investigation, during which it turns out that some Catholic priests in Boston are molesting children. The film is quite caustic regarding religion and keeps people glued to the screen mainly due to the fast pace of the plot. It is worth noting that films with such a social theme (specifically with an artistic component) quite rarely appear in cinemas and I think that is why it is recommended to watch it. However, it is possible that you will be bored, because what is happening is quite predictable..
It’s quite difficult to make assumptions regarding the Best Film nomination, because.To. It’s been a long time since people evaluate a picture based on all its components. “The Short Game,” “Brooklyn” (why did he even get here) and “Room” have minimal chances of winning?. "Spotlight" may win an award because of its social theme, but it probably won’t because of it. "Mad Max," although excellent, is not at all like the best film, even stylistically. But the three remaining films “Bridge of Spies”, “The Martian” and “The Revenant” are the main contenders. Society votes for “The Revenant,” of course, and if Iñárritu takes the statuette for best film for the second time in a row, this will only prove his uniqueness among modern directors. Perhaps last year’s victory may just prevent the film from winning. The last time David Selznick won two Oscars in a row for Best Picture was in 1939 and 1940 for Gone with the Wind and Rebecca.
